Climate Change
As the debate about "climate-gate" rages on, I start to wonder:
Who stands to benefit from "climate change"? Who's funding it? Who's pushing for it?
Who's paying these scientists?
As a side note, I am very passionate about humanitarian and environmental issues; thus, I strongly believe that there are much more pressing issues to deal with than reducing carbon production. E.g. reducing air pollution from sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides, remediating surface water and groundwater to provide clean drinking water for billions of people, deforestation / habitat destruction, species loss, etc..
Reduce carbon emissions my ass.

a lot of people benefit in a lot of different ways.
most recently, it'll be the developed nations.
that doesn't mean there isn't truth to it though.
@CreativeMinority - i find some of the results quite dubious though.
in life there will always be winner and losers, just when you lose its hard to try again
IMO, it's those who stand to make a profit by lowering standards; short-term thinkers who would rather place the burden on the future rather than taking it ourselves. We borrow the world from our grandchildren.
I think Al Gore's thing about global warming scared the crap out of the entire world, about spieces dying off, drought and flood and how Venus is going to sink into the ocean in a few years... maybe the governments are funding those? I have no clue.~
well, part of the cause for climate change is due to deforestation...
assuming global warming is caused by humans and not by the planet itself, we might not live to see the havoc, but our children definitely will...
well, the governments are always out for their own benefits so you can be sure that they are funding the so called "environmental issues" or the scientists who're studying 'em. And beneath the surface, they'll have their little scheme going on which really only benefits them.
They don't really care about the environment at stake...like the person above me says, we'll not live to see the devastating effect of global warming anyway so who cares. Might as well live the moment and rip whatever "reward" they can get out of now than later!
sad....but I suppose this is true to most politicians out there. Always out for themselves and nothing more~ sigh.....
"more pressing issues" " We borrow the world from our grandchildren." "we'll not live to see the devastating effect of global warming anyway so who cares. Might as well live the moment"
People who worry about climate change are people who care about others, even if they are far away, in place or in time.
There are several sides to an issue. Just as some will "benefit" from the knowledge of climate change, others stand to benefit if nothing is done.
Whose funding the opposition? Whose pushing against it?
Look how long it took for the Govt to finally declare cigarette smoking dangerous to your health? There were countless medical "experts" hired by tobacco companies that swore that cigarettes were safe. As a result cigarettes came with a luke warm message on their packs that said smoking "may" be hazardous to one's health"
The coal and oil industries have much to lose with climate change and global warming. If climate change is seen as questionable, they can delay making improvements to their pollution output.
Reducing carbon production is directly linked with reducing pollution and the chain effects of contamination of other resources.
The real question is: "Who's paying the climate change deniers?" It's just big industry trying to preserve their profit margins. What's more plausible, paying off 99 percent of the world's scientific community that says it's happening, or paying off 1 percent that says it's not?
Funny thing is if you pooh pooh man made climate change, you will be called a pariah, despite the fact that you are for actually cleaning up the environment. There are many well educated scientists that believe that man made global warming is a hoax. There are many falsehoods used as proof that man has caused global warming, or climate change as it is now caused since we seem to be cooling presently. (This of course does not disprove it, but it does make one wonder if there is a reason that the followers of the idea are using trickery.) Problem is, I don't see how global warming is that devastating. The longer growing seasons associated with the global warming at the end of the Dark Ages is credited for higher crop production and less poverty according to many historians, and there is no way that you could blame that climate change on man. I believe that man made climate change is the tool being used by many people in power to build larger beauracracies and consolidate their power.
@badboyprofessor - Doing something to care for others is good, if what you are doing for others is good. The jury is certainly still out on this one.
@lightnindan - I respectfully disagree with the idea that "there are many well educated scientists that believe that man made global warming is a hoax" and the jury is still out. The scientific data are pretty convincing (even if there was some overzealous behavior). What is disturbing is how successfully the people who perceive self-interest in confusing the matter have managed to confuse the matter.
Just from Wikipedia I find the following: Robert M. Carter, Vincent R. Gray, Richard S. Lindzen, and the list goes on. I omitted their first scientist because of his alleged funding by oil companies, which in no way discredits his work, it simply puts it into question. These guys aren't idiots, they simply see the data and have come to different conclusion.
