  • "Community Service"

I once participated in a community cleanup project where a group of us went to a park armed with trash bags, shovels, rakes, brooms and gloves.  We spent hours raking, sweeping, picking up trash, and pulling weeds.

We came across shopping carts, scattered piles of dirty / ripped up clothes, cardboard, and other strange odds and ends.  We found it a little odd to find so many personal items in one place, but shrugged it off.

It wasn't until we came across an aged sleeping bag, that we realized we were throwing away someone's only home.

  • did you return the stuff?

  • being homeless is unbelievably difficult.

    people treat them like lepers.
it's even worse now with the economy the way it is.

  • geez...what a bunch of spoiled people, didn't see a shopping cart for what it was...

  • @Roadlesstaken - we left the sleeping bag, and didn't touch anything within a few meters (radius) of the sleeping bag.  but, i guess a point i was trying to make is that, at times, it was hard to distinguish what was really "trash" and what belonged to the person.  e.g. plastic bottles = recycable; ripped shirt = trash? or personal item?; single shoe, missing shoelaces = ?

and, at that point, we also threw a lot of the stuff away already.. it's mixed with weeds, etc.  it was pretty sad. :( ((

  • @chess_piece - yea, the other point i was trying to make is that.. sometimes, even when you have good intentions.. you might wind up doing something bad / wrong. :(

  • this is really sad.. it reminds me of a french movie i recently watched called Versailles.. it's about the unemployed people in France who became homeless over time and started living in a forest. i'm not sure if the story background is partially true or just fictional, but it does makes me feel sad watching their plight and wish that as a society we can do more to help.

  • OH... We New Yorker would get the hint, once we see a shopping carts..  I guess you mean no harm, but still you're doing a thing with clean up...

  • =/ that is quite sad...kinda makes you wonder how the person must have percieved his daily life...

  • *shrugs* Couldn't be helped.
