Drove through the mountains with a group of people today... spent over half a tank of gas and drove 130 miles...

but it still seemed too short...

I want to drive more... more...

The miata handles well when it's not sliding around (err.. when it's dry).

  • "California's Top Educator Exposes Prop 8 Lies in Tough New Television Spot"

"Prop 8 has nothing to do with schools or kids," said Geoff Kors, NO on Prop 8 executive committee member. "The Prop 8 campaign continues to use scare tactics and lies to bolster their campaign. It's despicable that children are being used for political gain."
The television ad exposes the lies of the Prop 8 advertisements with O'Connell stating, "our schools aren't required to teach anything about marriage."
In fact, every education authority in the state has rejected the lies surrounding the Prop 8 campaign. The California Teachers Association and the California School Boards Association both maintain that Prop 8 has nothing to do with teaching in public schools. In addition, education leaders across the state have endorsed the NO on Prop. 8 campaign, including Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education President Monica Garcia, Davis Joint Unified School Board President Sheila Allen and San Francisco Board of Education Vice-President Kim-Shree Maufas.

Remember to vote No on Prop 8!

  • real game... real science

Fold it (Wacie, I think Brian'll like this game!) -

    Why is this game important?

What big problems is this game tackling?

    • Protein structure prediction:
As described above, knowing the structure of a protein is key to
understanding how it works and to targeting it with drugs. A small
proteins can consist of 100 amino acids, while some human proteins can
be huge (1000 amino acids). The number of different ways even a small
protein can fold is astronomical because there are so many degrees of
freedom. Figuring out which of the many, many possible structures is
the best one is regarded as one of the hardest problems in biology
today and current methods take a lot of money and time, even for
computers. Foldit attempts to predict the structure of a protein by
taking advantage of humans' puzzle-solving intuitions and having people
play competitively to fold the best proteins.

  • grad school

I want to go to grad school... yet I feel somewhat apprehensive...

  • for wacie, just so you know :-)

"Arguments signed by supporters of the measure included a claim that the Supreme Court's legalization of same-sex marriage will require teachers to tell their students, as young as kindergarten age, that same-sex marriage is the same as opposite-sex marriage - in other words, that "gay marriage is okay."

The pro-Prop. 8 campaign cited a state law requiring schools that teach a health curriculum to include instruction on the legal and financial aspects of marriage.

The No on 8 campaign countered that state law does not require instruction on health, marriage or same-sex marriage and that parents in California have the right to remove their children from any health class that conflicts with the parents' values.

Frawley said the Yes on 8 argument was false because instruction on marriage is not required and parents can withdraw their children."

  • Watch what you're feeding your baby with...

    From Scientific American

"Studies have surfaced in recent months that certain plastic products we use every day could be interfering with our hormone systems. Approximately 100,000 synthetic chemicals are approved for consumer products and industrial processes—and certain classes of them, it seems, are dangerous to our health. One compound in the news, known as BPA, is of particular concern."

    Who?
"A 2007 consensus statement from a 38-member scientific panel in the journal Reproductive Toxicology concluded that there was “great cause for concern” about the potential for adverse effects in humans. Health Canada announced this past April that BPA is “toxic to human health.” "

    Where can we find BPA?
"baby bottles, plastic wraps, water bottles, soda can liners and certain plastic containers that are heated in a microwave."

    What does it do?
Cause "reproductive and developmental disorders, such as early onset of puberty in girls, decline in semen quality, genital abnormalities, and even neurobehavioral problems such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder."

  • life in the universe

"Tons, perhaps tens of tons, of carbon molecules in dust particles and meteorites fall on Earth daily. Meteorites are especially valuable to astronomers because they provide relatively big chunks of carbon molecules that are easily analyzed in the laboratory.

"Molecules from space helped to make the Earth the pleasant place that it is today,” said Allamandola, founder of the Ames Astrochemistry Laboratory. "

    More from NASA

Carbon, oxygen and hydrogen molecules are not unique to Earth, in fact, they come from outer space. Is the universe, thus, a relatively hospitable place?

What if the universe were brimming with life? What if we were to find life? Would that change our view of ourselves, our view of existence? Would it shake up our pride, to realize that Earth is in no way, unique? That our existence, is mere chance?
